J. Duke Colby an attorney in New York’s Capital District, in the 1930s, the midst of the Great Depression, and there was not much legal work for a young attorney. But he had a family to feed, so he started to do leg work for other attorneys.

He would go to the Secretary of State or Court offices in the Albany, Schenectady and Troy area, picking up and delivering any document that an attorney might ask for. In 1939, he started calling himself Colby Attorneys Service, and word spread. If you needed anything found, served, filed or retrieved upstate, he was the man to call. The business thrived, based on attention to detail and a quick response time, at a reasonable cost.

In the late 1970s – early 1980s, “Duke” decided to retire and let others carry on the business., which then became incorporated as Colby Attorneys Service Co. Inc.

The rise of the internet and email offered opportunity to Colby Attorneys Services Co. Inc., and the offered services widened and the staff grew. Ruth Dennehey took over day-to- day operations with the same attention to detail and customer satisfaction. Ruth passed away after many years at the helm so her brother Ed Bowmaker stepped into her managing role.

While providing services to attorneys is still the bulk of our business, we are now relied upon by accountants, financial planners, real estate professionals and others, to form LLCs and corporations in all 50 states, provide New York service of process, document retrieval services, franchise tax searches and more. Colby is staffed with long term employees including Ed, Carla and Meagan as well as a few who joined us more recently. We remained open through COVID, with just Ed manning the office, and were delighted when the entire staff returned to us once the world opened again!

The entire Colby staff remains dedicated to customer satisfaction and attention to detail, all at a reasonable charge.

Everyone at Colby appreciates your business and pride themselves on:
